Thankfully surrounded by wisdom...

"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket - safe, dark, motionless, airless - it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable." --C.S. Lewis

Isn't the saying that it is better to have loved than to never have loved at all?

I think it is. If not, I just made it up.

Chin up mate. Now I need to go dive into some Lewis.

dru, thanks for the comment.

yes, that is pretty much the saying...just a slight variation. The actual saying is from an Alfred Lord Tennyson poem that reads:

I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

Beautiful, right? It's truth is objective, but it's sentiment is wonderful.

Happy diving.

Hi! I'm new to your blog but I'm quickly becoming a fan..

So far I've enjoyed reading your selection of quotes from prose or poetry.

Usually when I read quotes, I pause for a moment of contemplation or appreciation, and then move on.

But this particular quote, made me want to take out my scrapbook and scribble down two lines- of course inspired by the loss of love theme. Then the next day, I wrote a couple of more lines.
In the end, I ended up with this:

Last night, in darkness I mourned..
Mourned the loss of something that was never mine:
A stolen kiss..
A beating heart..
A once upon a time..
A hollow embrace..
A barren promise..
A glimmer of hope..
A happy ever after..
A miracle.. A disaster..
A sentence to a crime, so sweet.

I wish I had an upbeat note to end my comment!
I hate for this to be a downer..
